Why we have a soft spot for Bladnoch

At Vault of Spirits, we appreciate distilleries that create something truly unique – both in flavor and identity. Bladnoch distinguishes itself through its commitment to traditional production methods, patient maturation, and a distinctively light and grassy Lowland style that has become increasingly rare in Scotland.

Their renaissance under new ownership has breathed fresh life into this historic producer, balancing respect for heritage with bold new approaches to cask selection and finishing.

The History Behind Bladnoch

Origin and development

Bladnoch was founded in 1817 by John and Thomas McClelland in the southernmost part of Scotland, along the banks of the River Bladnoch. The distillery was established with a vision of creating quality Lowland single malt whisky, characterized by lightness and floral complexity.

Throughout its long history, Bladnoch has weathered numerous ownership changes, temporary closures, and industry challenges. After a period of silence, the distillery was purchased in 2015 by Australian entrepreneur David Prior, who began an ambitious renovation program to restore this sleeping giant to its former glory.

The people behind

The distillery is now led by master distiller Dr. Nick Savage, formerly of The Macallan, who brings technical expertise and innovation to this historic site. The team shares a deep passion for whisky and a commitment to honoring Bladnoch’s heritage while pushing its expressions in exciting new directions.

This balance of respect for tradition and embrace of innovation is evident in every bottle released under the revitalized Bladnoch brand.

The Craft and Production

From raw material to finished product

Production at Bladnoch begins with carefully selected Scottish barley. The distillery employs a relatively long fermentation period of up to 65 hours, which contributes to the development of fruity esters and complex flavor compounds.

Distillation takes place in Bladnoch’s tall copper pot stills, whose design promotes a light, elegant spirit character. The relatively high cut points during distillation ensure only the purest middle cut makes it into the casks, resulting in a clean, expressive new make spirit.

Maturation and aging

Maturation occurs primarily in ex-bourbon casks, though the distillery also employs a diverse range of wine casks for finishing, including sherry, Moscatel, and red wine barrels. This approach allows Bladnoch to maintain its distinctive Lowland character while exploring complementary flavor dimensions.

The cool, damp climate of southwest Scotland provides ideal conditions for slow, steady maturation, allowing the whisky to develop depth and complexity while retaining the signature lightness and grassiness for which Lowland malts are celebrated.
