Introduction to Deanston
A distillery with a passion for craftsmanship
Deanston is a Highland Scotch whisky distillery that embodies authentic Scottish craftsmanship with remarkable dedication to traditional methods. Located on the banks of the River Teith near Stirling, this former cotton mill has been transformed into one of Scotland’s most environmentally conscious distilleries, producing whiskies of exceptional character and depth.
The distillery’s magnificent stone buildings and idyllic riverside setting create the perfect backdrop for whisky production that honors both heritage and innovation.
Why we have a special appreciation for Deanston
At Vault of Spirits, we value Deanston for its unwavering commitment to traditional whisky-making techniques and sustainability. Deanston stands out for producing their whisky with 100% Scottish ingredients, using natural techniques with no artificial processes, and generating their own electricity through a hydroelectric facility built on the same river that once powered the cotton mill.
Their hand-crafted approach, non-chill-filtered expressions, and focus on allowing the whisky’s inherent character to shine through make Deanston a true gem in the whisky world.
The History Behind Deanston
Origin and development
Deanston began life in 1785 as a cotton mill designed by Sir Richard Arkwright. For nearly 180 years, it was a thriving textile factory employing over 1,500 workers in its heyday, with the community of Deanston built around it.
When the textile industry declined, the mill closed in 1965, but was given new life when it was converted into a distillery in 1966. The first spirit flowed from Deanston’s stills in 1967, and the distillery has been perfecting its craft ever since, despite a brief closure from 1982 to 1990.
Burn Stewart Distillers acquired Deanston in 1990, and today, as part of Distell Group, the distillery continues to honor its industrial heritage while crafting distinctive whiskies.
The people behind the spirit
Deanston is powered by a dedicated team of craftspeople who maintain the hands-on approach that defines the distillery’s character. Master Distiller Brendan McCarron and Master Blender Julieann Fernandez guide the distillery with expertise and passion, ensuring that each expression meets Deanston’s exacting standards.
The team’s commitment to traditional methods and environmental stewardship is evident in every aspect of production, from malting to bottling.
The Craft and Production
From raw materials to finished product
Deanston’s production begins with locally sourced Scottish barley, with a focus on using unpeated malt to showcase the distillery’s intrinsic character. The distillery employs an exceptionally long fermentation process of 100 hours—far longer than the industry standard—which develops a distinctly sweet, honeyed character in the spirit.
Distillation takes place in four copper pot stills with uniquely upward-tilting lyne arms, which promote greater copper contact and result in a remarkably clean, smooth spirit with a distinctive malty profile.
All Deanston whiskies are bottled at a minimum of 46.3% ABV, are non-chill filtered, and contain no artificial coloring—allowing the natural character of the whisky to express itself fully.
Maturation and aging
Deanston’s whiskies mature in the distillery’s unique warehouse, which was once the weaving shed of the cotton mill. With thick stone walls and a concrete floor constantly dampened by the nearby river, the warehouse maintains ideal conditions for whisky maturation.
The distillery primarily uses ex-bourbon casks from Kentucky for aging, though they also employ a variety of specialty casks, including Bordeaux wine, port, and specialty Scotch whisky casks for finishing.
The cool, steady temperature and higher humidity of the warehouse contribute to a slower maturation process that allows the whisky to develop remarkable complexity while losing less to the “angels’ share.”
