Located in Loretto, Kentucky, in the heart of bourbon country, this distillery has earned worldwide recognition for its distinctive bottles sealed with red wax and its consistently smooth, approachable bourbon.

Why we have a soft spot for Maker’s Mark
At Vault of Spirits, we appreciate distilleries that maintain unwavering dedication to their craft, and Maker’s Mark exemplifies this commitment perfectly. They stand out for their refusal to cut corners, choosing to rotate barrels by hand, dipping each bottle in their signature red wax individually, and using winter wheat instead of rye in their mash bill to create a distinctively smooth character.
Their philosophy of “making whisky slowly and carefully” resonates with our own values of celebrating authentic, quality-driven spirits with genuine heritage.
The history behind Maker’s Mark
Origin and development
Maker’s Mark was founded in 1953 when T. William “Bill” Samuels Sr. purchased the historic Burks Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. The distillery’s roots, however, stretch back to 1805, making it one of America’s oldest operating distilleries.
Bill Samuels Sr. was dissatisfied with the harsh bourbons of his day and set out to create a smoother, more refined whiskey. In a bold move, he famously burned his family’s 170-year-old bourbon recipe and developed a new one featuring wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain.
The first bottle of Maker’s Mark wasn’t sold until 1958, after six years of careful development and aging – establishing the patient approach that still defines the brand today.
The people behind
The Samuels family has been at the heart of Maker’s Mark for generations. After Bill Sr.’s innovative beginning, his son Bill Samuels Jr. took over in 1975 and helped expand the brand’s recognition worldwide while maintaining its handcrafted approach.
Bill Jr.’s son Rob Samuels continued the family tradition as Chief Operating Officer, guiding the brand into the modern era while preserving its legacy of quality and consistency.
Equally important to the brand’s identity was Margie Samuels, Bill Sr.’s wife, who created the distinctive name, the bottle design, the red wax seal, and the brand’s award-winning logo – contributions that earned her induction into the Bourbon Hall of Fame.
The craft and production
From raw material to finished product
Maker’s Mark begins with a mash bill of 70% corn, 16% wheat, and 14% malted barley. The choice of soft red winter wheat instead of the more common rye gives Maker’s Mark its signature smoothness and accessibility.
The distillery employs a roller mill rather than a hammer mill to gently crack their grains, and they use limestone-filtered water from their on-site lake. Their fermentation occurs in cypress wood fermenters – some of the last in the industry – which house a proprietary yeast strain that has been used for generations.
Distillation takes place in copper pot stills, which help remove sulfur compounds and contribute to the bourbon’s clean flavor profile.
Maturation and aging
Maker’s Mark ages their bourbon in new, charred American oak barrels. Unlike many bourbon producers, they rotate their barrels by hand during the aging process, moving them from the upper to lower levels of their warehouses to ensure consistent temperature exposure.
What’s particularly distinctive is that Maker’s Mark is bottled at a specific flavor profile rather than a specific age. Their whisky typically matures for around six to seven years until it reaches the desired taste, as determined by their tasting panel.
This focus on flavor rather than age statements demonstrates the brand’s dedication to consistency and quality over marketing-driven metrics.

Maker’s Mark Bourbon – An introduction to the house style
The flagship bourbon is the perfect starting point to understand the distillery’s DNA. With notes of caramel, vanilla, and fresh oak, coupled with hints of wheat-driven softness and a sweet, smooth finish, it’s a welcoming bourbon that appeals to both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.
Bottled at 45% ABV, it offers just enough proof to showcase its robust character while remaining exceptionally drinkable.
Maker’s Mark 46 – An experience for connoisseurs
This more complex expression begins as fully matured Maker’s Mark but undergoes additional finishing with seared French oak staves inserted into the barrel.
