Introduction
Highland Park’s commemorative edition honors the brave men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution who have served at Stromness station for 150 years, embodying the island spirit of courage and community that defines both the rescuers and this exceptional Orkney malt.
Production Method
- Raw materials: 100% Scottish malted barley, with a portion traditionally floor-malted and gently peated using aromatic Orkney peat from Hobbister Moor
- Distillation process: Crafted using Highland Park’s traditional methods with floor maltings and slow distillation in copper pot stills shaped to promote maximum copper contact
- Maturation: Aged in a selection of hand-picked European and American oak sherry seasoned casks in Highland Park’s cool, temperate Orkney warehouses
- Special techniques: Bottled at natural cask strength (55.9%) without chill filtration to preserve full flavor intensity and maritime character
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Sea spray and coastal air mingle with Highland Park’s signature aromatic peat smoke, heather honey sweetness, and hints of dried orange peel and spiced winter fruits
- Palate: Rich and powerful with waves of sweet vanilla, toasted oak, and sea-salt caramel, balanced by warming spices, dark chocolate, and a touch of Orkney’s heathery peat
- Finish: Long and complex with lingering maritime notes, gentle smokiness, and dried fruit sweetness that fades slowly like the setting sun over Stromness harbor
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (15-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Tulip-shaped whisky glass or Glencairn to concentrate the aromas
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat, though a few drops of spring water can open up additional complexity and soften the cask strength intensity
- Food pairings: Smoked salmon, aged island cheeses, dark chocolate with sea salt, or traditional Orkney oatcakes
