Introduction
Kingsbarns Balcomie is a signature expression from one of Scotland’s newest farm-to-bottle distilleries, celebrating the rich agricultural heritage and coastal character of the East Neuk of Fife.
Production Method
- Raw materials: 100% Scottish barley, primarily sourced from the surrounding Fife countryside, with pure local water from an aquifer beneath the distillery
- Distillation process: Double distilled in traditional copper pot stills with a relatively high cut point for a light, clean spirit character
- Maturation: Primarily aged in STR (shaved, toasted, re-charred) red wine barriques that deliver rich fruit notes and complex sweetness
- Special techniques: Non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV to preserve the whisky’s natural oils and flavor compounds
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Vibrant notes of red berries, orange marmalade, and toffee apple, with hints of vanilla custard and a subtle coastal breeze
- Palate: Rich caramel and butterscotch layered with poached pears, red fruits, and milk chocolate, balanced by a light salinity and gentle oak spice
- Finish: Medium to long with lingering notes of sweet malt, dried fruits, and a delicate maritime freshness
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (15-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Glencairn whisky glass or tulip-shaped nosing glass
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of spring water to open up the complex flavors
- Food pairings: Pairs excellently with milk chocolate desserts, sticky toffee pudding, or a cheeseboard featuring aged cheddar and fruit preserves
