Introduction
Mosstowie was a unique experimental setup within the Miltonduff distillery, operating from 1964 to 1981 with Lomond stills to create a distinctly different whisky profile from the same location.
Production Method
- Raw materials: Scottish malted barley from the Speyside region, with pure spring water from the Black Burn
- Distillation process: Distilled in rare Lomond stills, which featured adjustable lyne arms and removable plates to alter the character of the spirit
- Maturation: Aged for 23 years (1979-2002) likely in traditional oak casks under Gordon & MacPhail’s careful supervision
- Special techniques: Created as an experimental whisky using the innovative Lomond still design, producing a different character than traditional pot stills
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Delicate orchard fruits, gentle vanilla, honeyed sweetness, with subtle oak spice and hints of toasted malt
- Palate: Medium-bodied with creamy mouthfeel, sweet barley, apple compote, cinnamon, nutmeg, and light caramel notes
- Finish: Medium to long with lingering oak, dried fruit, and warming spices that gently fade
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (15-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Glencairn whisky glass or tulip-shaped nosing glass
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a small drop of spring water to open up the complex flavors
- Food pairings: Aged cheeses, dark chocolate, or simply on its own as an after-dinner dram
