Introduction
Octomore 14.2 continues Bruichladdich’s tradition of creating the world’s most heavily peated single malts, pushing boundaries while maintaining extraordinary balance and complexity against its intense smoky backdrop.
Production Method
- Raw materials: Scottish barley with an exceptional phenol content of 128.9 PPM, sourced from carefully selected farms and malted to Bruichladdich’s exacting specifications
- Distillation process: Traditional Scottish pot still distillation in Bruichladdich’s tall, narrow-necked stills that produce a remarkably pure spirit despite the high phenol content
- Maturation: Primary maturation in carefully selected Oloroso Sherry casks, with secondary finishing in rare Amarone wine casks from Italy
- Special techniques: Non-chill filtered and bottled at cask strength to preserve maximum flavor complexity, with no artificial coloring added
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Intense maritime peat smoke with hints of iodine and sea spray, followed by rich dark fruits, raisins, and warm spices from the Oloroso casks, with a subtle vinous quality from the Amarone finish
- Palate: Explosive wave of complex smoke and ash, balanced by sweet dried fruits, dark chocolate, leather, and Christmas cake. The high ABV delivers warming spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper with a surprising red berry sweetness
- Finish: Extraordinarily long with waves of peat smoke, sea salt, and dried fruit sweetness alternating in perfect harmony. The Amarone influence leaves traces of cherries and almonds as the smoke slowly fades
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (16-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Tulip-shaped whisky glass or Glencairn to concentrate the complex aromas
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat first to experience the full intensity, then with a few drops of spring water to open up additional flavor dimensions
- Food pairings: Dark chocolate with high cocoa content, blue cheeses like Roquefort, or smoked seafood that can stand up to the intense flavors
