Introduction
Annandale Distillery in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, has a history stretching back to 1836, but lay dormant for over a century before being reopened in 2014 following an ambitious restoration. The “Man O’ Sword” series pays tribute to local Scottish hero William Wallace and represents the distillery’s peated expression line – a bold and characterful whisky that reflects the raw and proud landscape along the River Annan.
Production Method
- Ingredients: Scottish-grown malted barley, peated with Scottish peat to create a pronounced phenolic character that gives the whisky its signature smokiness
- Distillation process: Traditional pot still distillation in copper stills at the newly restored Annandale Distillery, combining classic craft traditions with modern precision
- Maturation: Matured in a single Oloroso Sherry cask (#755) from 2015, contributing deep fruit and nut notes alongside a distinctive deep mahogany colour
- Special techniques: Bottled as a single cask at natural cask strength without dilution or colouring, ensuring the most authentic and unadulterated expression from the individual cask
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich and inviting with dark fruits such as dried plums, raisins and figs, combined with sweet peat smoke, dark chocolate, vanilla and subtle notes of leather and spice
- Palate: Powerful and complex with a beautiful balance between the sweet, nutty Oloroso Sherry character and the underlying peated smoke – notes of dark caramel, walnuts, candied orange peel, black pepper and a warm, oily mouthfeel
- Finish: Long and lingering with dried spices, dark chocolate notes, a light tannic structure from the sherry cask and a soft, warm smoky dimension that pleasantly lingers
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to bring out the full complexity
- Glass recommendation: A tulip-shaped nosing glass (e.g. Glencairn) that concentrates the aromas and provides the best nosing experience
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a single drop of clean, soft water to open up the whisky and release deeper aromatic complexities; avoid ice cubes, as these dull the finer nuances
- Food pairings: Excellent alongside dark chocolate (70%+), goat’s cheese with honey, smoked salmon, game dishes with mushroom sauce, or a classic cheese and charcuterie board featuring mature, salted varieties
