Introduction
Annandale Distillery, located in Annan in southern Scotland, reopened in 2014 after more than 90 years of silence, making it one of Scotland’s most exciting revived distilleries. The “Man O’ Words” series is a tribute to the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was born nearby, and represents a fruit-forward, sherry-matured style that reflects the distillery’s ambitions to create world-class Lowland single malt.
Production Method
- Raw materials: High-quality Scottish malted barley, carefully selected to bring out the fruity and full-bodied character that defines Annandale’s “Man O’ Words” style
- Distillation process: Double distilled in traditional copper pot stills at Annandale Distillery in Annan, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, in accordance with classic Scottish single malt methods
- Maturation: Matured in a single Oloroso Sherry cask (#839) from the distillation year 2015, contributing deep notes of fruit, nuts and spice
- Special techniques: Bottled as a single cask at cask strength without dilution or chill-filtration, preserving the full complexity and character directly from the cask
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich and inviting with dark fruits such as plums, raisins and cherries, followed by vanilla, dark chocolate, lightly smoked oak and warm spices such as cinnamon and clove
- Palate: Full-bodied and powerful at cask strength, with layers of dried fruit, sherry sweetness, dark brown sugar, walnuts and spiced oak – complex and well-rounded with a remarkable balance despite the high alcohol content
- Finish: Long and warming with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, a gentle bitterness from the oak and a subtle mineral finish that speaks to the Lowland terroir
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to open up the complex aromas
- Glassware: A tulip-shaped nosing glass (e.g. Glencairn) is recommended to concentrate and highlight the rich aromas
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat with a few drops of cold, non-chlorinated water to unlock the cask’s full complexity – or over a single ice cube for a more subdued experience
- Food pairings: Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate (70%+), aged cheeses such as Manchego or Comté, walnut cake, confectionery with dried fruits, and richly spiced game or lamb dishes
Product Specifications
- Alcohol content: 59.6% ABV (cask strength)
- Bottle size: 70 cl
- Country/Region of origin: Scotland – Annan, Dumfries & Galloway (Lowlands)
- Certifications/Awards: Since reopening in 2014, Annandale Distillery has received widespread recognition from international whisky media and competitions, including praise from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and Whisky Magazine for the distillery’s ambitious and quality-driven approach to Lowland single malt
