Introduction
Hødal Whisky No. 6 Master’s Choice is a milestone in Danish whisky making: launched in 2023 to celebrate Nordisk Brænderi’s 10th anniversary since the very first Special Edition No. 1 saw the light of day. As the sixth release in the series and a central part of the hand-selected Master’s Choice range, this 5-year-old single malt represents the pinnacle of Danish whisky craftsmanship – proof that Nordic terroir and artisanal pride can deliver an experience of international standing.
Production Method
- Ingredients: The whisky is produced from a herbal wort created in close collaboration with the experienced brewers at Thisted Bryghus and Skagen Bryghus, who supplied the whisky wort that was subsequently distilled and matured at Nordisk Brænderi in Denmark.
- Distillation process: Distillation was carried out at Nordisk Brænderi, which since 2013 has built solid experience and expertise in Danish single malt production.
- Maturation: The whisky has been aged for 5 years in PX Sherry casks. Approximately half matured in a 200-litre cask followed by a finish in a single 100-litre cask, while the other half was fully matured in 100-litre casks – a two-part maturation strategy that contributes to depth and complexity.
- Special techniques: The whisky is non-chill filtered, preserving the natural oils and aromas in the finished bottle. This is a Limited Edition release and forms part of Nordisk Brænderi’s exclusive Master’s Choice distiller’s series.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Inviting and full-bodied nose with prominent caramel and dried fruit from the PX Sherry casks, supported by soft notes of vanilla and a hint of sweet tobacco.
- Palate: Rich and well-rounded with a fine balance between sweetness and structure. Caramel and leather dominate the flavour profile, complemented by lightly fruity nuances and a delicate spiciness that speaks to a well-developed interplay between distillate and cask.
- Finish: Long and elegant finish with soft notes of sweet tobacco, warm spices and a touch of dark chocolate – a true expression of craftsmanship and care throughout the entire production process.
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to highlight the whisky’s complex aromas and natural oiliness.
- Glass recommendation: A tulip-shaped nosing glass (e.g. Glencairn) that concentrates the aromas and allows the subtle nuances of the PX Sherry cask maturation to fully express themselves.
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a single drop of cold spring water to open up the whisky and reveal the depth of its flavour profile. Avoid ice cubes, as these can suppress the delicate aromas.
- Food pairings: Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, aged cheeses, caramelised nuts or a fine cigar. The caramel and leather notes also complement desserts featuring dried fruit and candied nuts.
