Introduction
Penderyn Serpent’s Tears is an exclusive and limited single malt Welsh whisky, created and matured at Penderyn’s Llandudno Lloyd Street distillery in the shadow of the majestic rocky headland Great Orme in North Wales. The whisky’s name and spirit are deeply rooted in the area’s rich Viking history, where the mist-shrouded promontory once signalled danger to seafarers – and today, it guides the modern whisky lover safely to harbour in much the same way, with its refined and adventurous character.
Production Method
- Ingredients: Lightly peated malted barley, carefully selected to deliver a delicate and balanced smoky character without overpowering the fruity and creamy notes
- Distillation process: Distilled at Penderyn’s Llandudno Lloyd Street distillery using the distillery’s distinctive methods, ensuring a clean and elegant spirit of great complexity
- Maturation: Matured in bourbon casks, which contribute soft vanilla tones, sweet caramel and a round, creamy texture that perfectly complements the peated elements
- Special techniques: The Llandudno expression is lightly peated, setting it apart from Penderyn’s core range and giving Serpent’s Tears its characteristic smoky, fruity profile at a natural bottling strength of 46% ABV
Tasting Notes
- Nose: An autumn day in a glass – dry leaves, orchard fruit, wood smoke reminiscent of crackling dry timber in an open fireplace, with creamy background notes and rich toasted bread
- Palate: Sweet peat, soft vanilla cream and sugar pancakes with burnt edges; baked apples with hints of malt and a touch of peppery spice and cloves
- Finish: Warming and gentle peat that lingers pleasantly on the palate, followed by a sweet barley character that slowly fades
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to highlight the full complexity of the flavour notes
- Glass recommendation: A tulip-shaped nosing glass or a Glencairn glass, which concentrates the aromas optimally and allows the delicate peaty and fruity tones to shine
- Serving suggestions: Best enjoyed neat, perhaps with a single drop of cold spring water to open the whisky and bring out the creamy and fruity elements; perfect as a contemplative evening dram by the fireplace
- Food pairings: Smoked salmon, aged cheeses such as cheddar, dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, baked apples with cinnamon, or lightly smoked cheeses that play beautifully against the whisky’s peaty notes
