Introduction
Port Charlotte 10 Year Old represents Bruichladdich’s vision of a heavily peated Islay malt that honors traditional distillation methods while embracing progressive cask management techniques. This cornerstone expression showcases the perfect marriage between intense peat character and the elegant sophistication that has become Bruichladdich’s signature style.
Production Method
- Raw materials: 100% Scottish barley, peated to 40 phenol parts per million (PPM), with Islay spring water from nearby Octomore farm
- Distillation process: Slow distillation in tall, narrow-necked copper pot stills, allowing maximum copper contact and flavor development
- Maturation: Vatting of whiskies aged in 65% first-fill American whiskey casks, 10% second-fill American whiskey casks, and 25% second-fill French wine casks for a full decade
- Special techniques: Non-chill filtered and bottled at 50% ABV with no added coloring, maintaining all natural oils and flavor compounds
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Maritime peat smoke opens with sweet caramel, vanilla custard, lemon honey, and fresh oysters. Additional notes of toasted oak, smoked barley, and candied orange peel emerge with time
- Palate: Robust and oily mouthfeel with waves of peat smoke and sea salt, balanced by oak sweetness, coconut, vanilla, and toffee. Layers of citrus, dried fruits, malt cereal, and charred oak provide complexity
- Finish: Long and warming with lingering smoky peat, sea spray, caramelized sugar, and oak spices that gradually fade, leaving a pleasant dry smokiness
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (15-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Tulip-shaped whisky glass or Glencairn
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of spring water to open up additional aromatic complexity
- Food pairings: Strong blue cheeses, smoked seafood, dark chocolate with sea salt, or grilled meats with caramelized edges
