Introduction to Bruichladdich

A distillery with passion for craft

Bruichladdich is a progressive Islay distillery that beautifully marries traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Located on the western shore of Islay, this iconic establishment has built a reputation for creating whiskies that celebrate terroir, transparency, and authenticity – all crafted with an unwavering respect for raw materials and technique.

The name “Bruichladdich” (pronounced brook-laddie) comes from Gaelic, meaning “shore bank,” reflecting its stunning coastal location overlooking Loch Indaal and the Atlantic Ocean.

Why we have a soft spot for Bruichladdich

At Vault of Spirits, we admire Bruichladdich’s bold, uncompromising approach to whisky making. They stand out for their commitment to provenance, using 100% Scottish barley (much of it from Islay itself), traditional production methods, and their exploration of terroir in whisky.

Their philosophy of transparency, which reveals every aspect of production from barley field to bottling, resonates deeply with our own values. Bruichladdich dares to be different in an industry often bound by convention.

The History Behind Bruichladdich

Origin and development

Bruichladdich was originally founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers – William, John, and Robert. The distillery was built using stone from the seashore and designed with tall stills to produce a remarkably pure and unpeated spirit, quite different from its Islay neighbors.

After a turbulent history of closures and ownership changes throughout the 20th century, Bruichladdich faced near-extinction until 2000, when it was purchased by a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier. This resurrection marked the beginning of what many call “Bruichladdich 2.0” – a revolutionary new chapter in the distillery’s story.

The people behind

The modern Bruichladdich renaissance was driven by a visionary team including Mark Reynier, master distiller Jim McEwan (who came out of retirement to join the project), and Duncan McGillivray. Their collective passion breathed new life into the Victorian equipment and philosophy of the distillery.

Today, under the ownership of Rémy Cointreau (since 2012), Bruichladdich continues its progressive path with Head Distiller Adam Hannett carrying the torch. The team remains fiercely committed to Islay, employing over 80 people on the island and making all their whisky exclusively on Islay.

The Craft and Production

From raw material to finished product

Bruichladdich’s production begins with barley – the distillery’s true passion. They use 100% Scottish barley, with special editions made from barley grown on Islay itself. Unlike most modern distilleries, they maintain traditional open-topped mash tuns and exceptionally long fermentation times (up to 160 hours) to develop complex flavors.

Distillation occurs in the original Victorian-era equipment, including tall, narrow-necked copper stills that produce a remarkably delicate spirit. Nothing is automated – every stage relies on human skill and judgment rather than computers, what they call “hand-crafted” whisky in the truest sense.

Maturation and aging

Bruichladdich’s warehouses, located right on the Atlantic coast, allow the maritime climate to influence their maturing spirit. The distillery is known for its innovative cask management program, exploring a wide variety of wood types including ex-bourbon, wine, sherry, and numerous other cask types.

All Bruichladdich whiskies are bottled on Islay at the distillery, without chill-filtration or artificial coloring, maintaining their natural character. Many releases are bottled at higher strengths to preserve the full flavor profile.

Selected Products from Bruichladdich

The Classic Laddie – An introduction to the house style

This flagship unpeated expression exemplifies Bruichladdich’s house style. Crafted from Scottish barley and matured in American oak, it offers vibrant notes of green apple, honey, malt, and sea spray with a distinctive mineral quality. The beautiful aquamarine bottle reflects the colors of the Islay sea that shapes this whisky’s character.

Bottled at 50% ABV without coloring or chill-filtration, The Classic Laddie provides an excellent gateway into understanding Bruichladdich’s commitment to terroir and transparency.

Port Charlotte – The heavily peated expression

Port Charlotte represents Bruichladdich’s heavily peated line (40ppm), named after the neighboring village. Despite its significant peat level, these whiskies maintain an elegance and complexity beyond mere smoke. Expect maritime saltiness, sweet barley, vanilla, and sophisticated layers of peat smoke, often described as more refined than typical Islay malts.

The Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, bottled at 50% ABV, strikes an exceptional balance between youthful vibrancy and matured complexity, making it a favorite among peat enthusiasts seeking nuance.
