Introduction

Bunnahabhain 15 Year Old “An Cuan Garbh” – Gaelic for “The Rough Sea” – is the second release in the distillery’s Westering Home Collection, a series drawing on the traditional Islay hymn of the same name and celebrating the deep bonds between the island, its people and international markets. As one of Islay’s most iconic unpeated distilleries, Bunnahabhain here unites its characteristic maritime soul with a refined and distinctive white wine finish, elevating the whisky to a new level of complexity and elegance.

Production Method

  • Ingredients: Scottish malted barley without peat – Bunnahabhain is renowned for its unpeated, natural style, allowing the quality of the malt and cask to speak for themselves
  • Distillation Process: Traditional pot still distillation at Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay, Scotland, in keeping with the distillery’s artisanal traditions since 1881
  • Maturation: 15 years primarily in refill bourbon casks, followed by a finish in white wine casks from port producers in the Douro Valley, Portugal – a technique that imparts a floral and fruit-sweet dimension without overpowering the underlying maritime character
  • Special Techniques: Bottled at cask strength (51.6%) without chill-filtration and without added colouring, preserving the whisky in its most natural and authentic form. Limited to 6,588 bottles worldwide as part of the Westering Home Collection

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Fresh and inviting with notes of ripe peach, white grape and fresh citrus fruits, supported by delicate floral tones from the white wine finish, sweet vanilla from the bourbon casks and a subtle hint of salty sea air – a hallmark of Islay
  • Palate: Rich and well-rounded with a harmonious balance between fruity sweetness – apricot, pear and nutmeg – and deeper, more complex notes of oak, dark honey and gentle warming spice; the white wine finish lends an elegant and lively fruity freshness that complements the distillery’s natural malt character
  • Finish: Long and smooth with lingering fruit notes, a pleasant mineral saltiness from Islay’s maritime environment, light oak and a subtle sweetness from the white wine casks – a harmonious and memorable conclusion to a complex flavour journey

Serving Recommendations

  • Serving Temperature: Room temperature (approx. 18–20°C) to achieve the best balance between aroma and flavour
  • Glassware: Tulip-shaped nosing glass (e.g. Glencairn) to concentrate and highlight the complex aromas
  • Serving Suggestions: Best enjoyed neat or with a single drop of cold spring water to open up the finer aromatic nuances; ice is not recommended for a whisky of this complexity and strength
  • Food Pairings: Aged cheeses such as mature cheddar or manchego, smoked salmon, fresh shellfish, dark bitter chocolate with fruity notes or a light honey-based dessert – dishes that bring out the whisky’s fruitiness and maritime character

Product Specifications

  • Alcohol Content: 51.6% ABV (cask strength)
  • Bottle Size: 70 cl
  • Country/Region of Origin: Islay, Scotland – Bunnahabhain Distillery, founded 1881
  • Certifications/Awards: Official bottling from Bunnahabhain Distillery; part of the exclusive and limited Westering Home Collection; non-chill filtered and natural colour – a guarantee of authenticity and artisanal integrity
