Introduction
Glen Ord Distillery is located in the northern part of Scotland, in Muir of Ord near Inverness, and is one of the oldest distilleries in the Highlands, with roots dating back to 1838. The distillery is particularly renowned for its use of locally grown barley and its distinctive pot stills, which produce a rich and fruity whisky with a complex flavour profile – characteristics that have been further enhanced here by 16 years of maturation in a first fill Oloroso Sherry Butt.
Production Method
- Ingredients: Scottish malted barley, traditionally associated with Glen Ord’s own maltings floor and locally sourced raw materials from the Highlands region
- Distillation process: Double distilled in traditional copper pot stills at Glen Ord Distillery; distilled in 2009
- Maturation: 16 years in a first fill Oloroso Sherry Butt, imparting an intense and generous influence of sherry wood sweetness, dried fruits and spices
- Special techniques: Bottled at natural cask strength (56.4%) without dilution and most likely without chill filtration, which is a hallmark of Signatory Vintage’s Cask Strength Collection – preserving the full texture and natural oils from the cask
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich and inviting with dark berries, sultanas and currant raisins, softened orange marmalade, vanilla and a gentle oak spice from the generous Oloroso Sherry Butt
- Palate: Full-bodied and warming with dark chocolate, dried figs, plums and cherries, supported by warm baking spices such as cinnamon and cloves, along with a hint of nuts and a subtle tannic structure from the sherry cask
- Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of dark fruits, chocolate and subtle oak tannins – the high cask strength ensures a lasting and deeply satisfying conclusion
Serving Suggestions
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to bring out the full complexity
- Glass recommendation: A nosing glass or Glencairn glass, which concentrates the aromas and showcases the whisky’s depth to best effect
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat, with perhaps a small drop of cold water to open up the whisky and soften the alcohol, allowing the fruity and spiced nuances to come forward
- Food pairings: Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate (70%+), aged cheddar or comté, walnuts and dates, as well as desserts featuring caramel and dried fruits
