Introduction
Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the southern coast of Islay, and since then it has produced some of the most iconic and recognisable single malts in the world. “Strong Characters – Chapter One” is the first instalment in a new series celebrating the people who have shaped Laphroaig throughout the ages – and this opening chapter honours Donald Johnston, the elder of the two brothers who dared to create the distillery’s legendary character.
Production Method
- Raw materials: Traditional malted barley from Islay, peated in the classic Laphroaig style that has defined the distillery’s DNA since 1815
- Distillation process: Double distilled in Laphroaig’s distinctive pot stills, ensuring the full, rich and complex character for which the distillery is renowned worldwide
- Maturation: 33 years in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads – an extraordinary period of maturation that has granted the whisky a depth and complexity far beyond the ordinary
- Special techniques: Bottled at a fixed strength of 43.8% to preserve the optimal balance and character. The packaging is adorned with illustrations by award-winning British artist Bill Bragg and is accompanied by a booklet telling the story of Donald Johnston and the origins of Laphroaig
Tasting Notes
- Nose: An inviting and complex nose with notes of sweet desserts, soft sherry tones and a delicate, well-integrated peat smoke, supported by deep fruity and subtly vanilla-like aromas from the long-matured bourbon casks
- Palate: A harmonious and well-rounded flavour profile, bringing together sweet dessert notes, soft and elegant sherry, and a restrained, savoury peat smoke in perfect balance – with traces of dark fruit, spice and a natural richness derived from 33 years of maturation
- Finish: Long, warm and complex, with a lingering smokiness that fades gently, leaving traces of sweet sherry, dark chocolate and a subtle mineral salinity – a true hallmark of a well-matured Islay malt
Serving Recommendations
- Serving temperature: Room temperature, approximately 18–20°C, to bring out the full complexity and many layers of aroma
- Glassware: A Glencairn glass or tulip-shaped nosing glass, which concentrates the aromas and provides the best possible tasting experience
- Serving suggestions: Best enjoyed neat, with perhaps a single drop of cold water to open up the finer nuances and full depth of this rare 33-year-old whisky
- Food pairings: Smoked salmon, dark chocolate, aged goat’s cheese with honey, or classic Scottish cheeses – elements that complement the smoky, sweet and fruity complexity
