Introduction
Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 1 represents the pure, unfiltered essence of this relatively new Scottish distillery, which opened in 2018 on the historic Ayrshire farm where poet Robert Burns once lived and worked.
Production Method
- Raw materials: Single malt whisky produced using barley grown directly on Lochlea’s own farmland, giving complete control over the raw ingredients from field to bottle
- Distillation process: Double distillation in copper pot stills, following traditional Scottish methods while implementing modern precision techniques
- Maturation: Matured in a carefully selected combination of first-fill Bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry casks
- Special techniques: Bottled at natural cask strength (60.1%) without chill filtration to preserve the whisky’s full character and depth of flavor
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich aromas of honeycomb, baked apple, and vanilla custard, with hints of toasted oak and warming spices
- Palate: Full-bodied and intense with layers of butterscotch, poached pears, ginger biscuits, and dark chocolate, underpinned by subtle citrus notes
- Finish: Long and warming with lingering sweet spices, dried fruit, and a gentle touch of oak tannins
Recommended Serving
- Serving temperature: Room temperature (16-18°C)
- Glass recommendation: Tulip-shaped whisky glass or Glencairn glass to concentrate the aromas
- Serving ideas: Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open up the complex flavors and reduce the alcohol intensity
- Food pairings: Dark chocolate, rich fruit cake, mature cheeses, or enjoyed as a contemplative after-dinner dram
Product Specifications
